Rashida Tlaib made history when she became the first Palestinian-American woman elected to Congress in 2018. She is also one of the first two Muslim women to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Early Life and Career

Tlaib was born in Detroit, Michigan, to Palestinian immigrant parents. She earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Wayne State University and a law degree from Thomas M. Cooley Law School. After graduating, she worked as a community organizer and civil rights attorney.

Tlaib entered politics in 2008 when she was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives. She served in the state legislature for six years before running for Congress.

Priorities and Services

As a Congresswoman, Tlaib has been an outspoken advocate for progressive causes, including Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, and criminal justice reform. She is also a strong supporter of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement, which seeks to pressure Israel to end its occupation of Palestinian territories.

In addition to her policy work, Tlaib has also made constituent services a priority. She has held numerous town halls and outreach events, and her office has helped constituents with a variety of issues, such as accessing affordable healthcare and navigating the immigration process.

Controversy and Impact

Tlaib's outspoken nature has sometimes led to controversy. In 2019, she was one of several Democratic congresswomen who were targeted by President Donald Trump, who said they should "go back" to their own countries.

Despite the challenges, Tlaib has remained a popular figure among her constituents and activists. She has used her platform to highlight the struggles faced by marginalized communities and to advocate for change.
